To visit Castles in the province The numerous medieval castles and watchtowers of the province are a large page of the history of this area. These ancient buildings, built mainly in the Middle Ages, ensured the feudal lords of the time the control of the Central South of the Island. The territory of the province of Caltanissetta represented a sort of wall between Eastern and Western Sicily, and this limit roughly coincided with the trend of the Southern Imera river. In general these buildings were used as watchtowers and there were allocated garrisons of soldiers.
